Labour introduced a Default Retirement Age, whereby employers are able to terminate or deny employment to people over 65 without a reason in October 2006. The reasons given for mandatory retirement are usually that occupations are either too dangerous or require high levels of physical and mental skill, but mandatory retirement ages fail to address individualism or the variety of jobs that there are. The Conservatives are planning to phase out the default retirement age, so people can keep working if they wish.
Thank you for your question Tweeny! Mmm this is difficult, but I will try to answer.
It could be due to their age as they are nearing retiring age, 60 for women and 65 for a Man or it could be due to ill health. I feel if people want to work on they should be allowed to work, but that does have a knock on effect for the younger generation who are looking for work.
Thank you for your question
Thats a very good question and it poses lots of other questions. The Government set a mandatory retirement age of 65 yrs. If the employer and employee agree, then the employee could work beyond the age of 65.
Some people could argue, well, if people retired earlier then this would free places for younger people seeking work.
Another arguement could be that some people may need to work beyong 65 for financial reasons. Some people choose to work longer as they love doing what they do. So, as I have stated, its not an easy answer.
Personally, I hope to have retired by then and have a bit of free time!!! Thanks for the question.
Some jobs are barred for people over a certain age as Sean indicated, but some roles due to the new Equalities Act allow you to extend your time at work past the mandatory retirement age. For me, I want to retire early and move to Italy.
