That’s a tough question, when smoking was first invented doctors didn’t realise the damage it did to us. Since then scientists and doctors have discovered how smoking damages our bodies, and that’s why cigarette boxes have large warnings on them.

Smoking originated in the Americas c.5000BC in the incense-burning ceremonies of shamans, it was later adopted as a social tool by the Mayans (e.g. peace pipes). Tobacco was smoked to achieve trances and to come into contact with the spirit world as part of the religous beliefs of the culture.

The first person to smoke in England was seen in Bristol and was a sailor in c.1550. At the time smoking was thought to be a form of medicine which was good for you, at the time many of the new products from overseas that were not understood were classed as medicines e.g. tea, coffee & opium.

It wasn’t until the 1950s that people began to understand how bad smoking was for people’s health.

Hi Tweeny, It can be dated back to as far as 5,000 BC so it’s been around for a very long time..
It was probably invented as a past time, hobbie or a status symbol.
    Thanks again
